Description

Common name of hyssop: Blue Hyssop

Hyssop is an aromatic plant that is traditionally used to brew tea and as a medicinal plant

 

This plant with its blue flowers and fragrant leaves is a favorite source of nectar for bees. We grow this plant in favorable conditions

 such as:

  • Water the plant regularly in the first growing season

This plant is native to southern Europe,

Central Asia and North America.

Hyssopus officinalis L is a species of hyssop that is cultivated in Iran.

Hyssop is thought to have antioxidant properties that may have many benefits. Antioxidants are powerful components that can fight harmful substances and free radicals in your body. A team of researchers in Romania published a paper that investigated the antioxidant activity of hyssop. The paper showed high levels of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant found in hyssop oils and extracts. These polyphenols were shown to have moderate levels of antioxidant activity in hyssop.

 

  • Antiviral Properties

 

Hyssop may be useful in preventing the spread of these and other viruses.

A 2016 review of Iranian herbal medicines for herpes simplex viruses (HSVs) reported on the potential anti-viral activity of hyssop. The review lists several studies that showed hyssop extract to be able to slow the onset of HSV-1 infection by more than 50% in mice

Compounds:

Hyssop leaves and its green stems contain many bioactive compounds such as Rosemary and Caffeic acids along with Pinanion, Beta-Pinene, limonene, Pinamophon and Isopinocampone, Tannin, glycoside (diozyme), flavonoids and merobin.

 

 

 

Side Effects of Hyssop:

 

Even natural treatments can have unwanted side effectt. The herb is believed to be relatively safe at levels commonly.However, at high doses, hyssop can be dangerous.

Common hyssop side effects include:

 

  • Upset stomach
  • Anxiety
  • Tremor
  • Increased blood pressure

 

Physical form:

This plant has completely smooth, quadrangular and straight leaves and stems. Its smooth leaves do not have long, narrow teeth, and its color is light green.

The flowers of this plant are blue, pink or white. The color of the flower has no effect on the composition of the essential oil
